They provide an automated controlling of position and heading of the vessel using its own thrusters to compensate environmental disturbances. The allocation of total required force over the available actuators is a complex task, as DP-systems are over-actuated. Therefore, one of the main challenges faced by the industry is constantly seeking to improve the systems efficiency for both sustainability and economic reasons. Furthermore, it is important to evaluate the performance of a DP vessel under critical conditions. In this paper, the authors aim to compare different thrust allocation logics based on the optimisation of different objective functions. Using a simple validation tool, the authors were able to investigate the overall efficiency of a dynamic positioning propulsion system and its ability to operate when a failure occurs.  000007725 542__ $$fCC-BY-NC-ND-4.0 000007725 6531_ $$aDynamic positioning 000007725 6531_ $$athrust allocation logic 000007725 6531_ $$afailure analysis 000007725 7001_ $$aCoraddu, A$$uNaval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering Strathclyde University, Glasgow G1 1XW, UK 000007725 7001_ $$aDonnarumma, S$$uDepartment of Naval Architecture, Electric, Electronic, and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Genoa, Genoa 16145, Italy 000007725 7001_ $$aChu, K$$uNaval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering Strathclyde University, Glasgow G1 1XW, UK 000007725 7001_ $$aFigari, M$$uDepartment of Naval Architecture, Electric, Electronic, and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Genoa, Genoa 16145, Italy 000007725 773__ $$tConference Proceedings of iSCSS 000007725 773__ $$jiSCSS 2018 000007725 789__ $$whttps://zenodo.org/record/2536890$$2URL$$eIsIdenticalTo 000007725 85641 $$uhttps://www.imarest.org/iscss$$yConference website 000007725 8564_ $$901ef464d-d8f7-4690-9991-64209e3230d1$$s1105173$$uhttps://library.imarest.org/record/7725/files/ISCSS%202018%20Paper%20043%20Donnarumma%20FINAL.pdf
