The more so after nuclear propulsion set an unattainable goal that can therefore not be emulated by the most advanced concepts. Even so conventional AIP submarines, small and large, can profit from operational advantages depending on the specific system. Hence the question remains what to choose from a variety of options. This overview is intended to provide a background on what is available “off-the-shelf” and what can be expected from on-going development even if today’s naval architect has to wait for the promises to become true. The present paper provides an overview of the options and the impact they have on the submarine design under consideration. Apart from Closed Cycle Diesel and Stirling systems also Fuel Cell systems with stored or reformed H2 are reviewed. In addition the performance of advanced batteries is included as an alternative to AIP 000007711 542__ $$fCC-BY-4.0 000007711 6531_ $$aConventional submarines 000007711 6531_ $$aAir independent Power generating concept 000007711 6531_ $$aFuel cells 000007711 6531_ $$aAdvanced batteries 000007711 7001_ $$aPrins, C$$uMember of Dutch Underwater Knowledge Centre & Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands 000007711 7001_ $$aStapersma, D$$uMember of Dutch Underwater Knowledge Centre & Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands 000007711 773__ $$tConference Proceedings of INEC 000007711 773__ $$jINEC 2020 000007711 789__ $$whttps://zenodo.org/record/4498566$$2URL$$eIsIdenticalTo 000007711 85641 $$uhttps://www.imarest.org/events/inec-2020$$yConference website 000007711 8564_ $$9701464c1-af6c-41e2-a0b3-dfb1f00d9936$$s1708675$$uhttps://library.imarest.org/record/7711/files/INEC_2020_Paper_109.pdf
