While maritime as a domain has some unique facets, it can be helpful to consider and draw lessons from other domains where autonomy is better established and assurance approaches are more significantly developed. This paper first explores the development of the prominent autonomy frameworks and assurance standards in the automotive domain. This paper then identifies the commonalities and differences between the maritime and automotive domain. Finally, the paper reviews the current status of autonomy frameworks and standards in maritime autonomy and concludes that there is a need for a single, unified autonomy framework for the maritime domain, which will then enable assurance approaches and standards to be more meaningfully developed and achieved. 000007655 542__ $$fCC-BY-4.0 000007655 6531_ $$aAutonomy frameworks 000007655 6531_ $$asafety 000007655 6531_ $$asecurity 000007655 6531_ $$aassurance 000007655 6531_ $$amaritime autonomy 000007655 7001_ $$aHoward, Giles$$uL3 MAPPS Limited, Bristol, UK 000007655 7001_ $$aChilcott, Joe$$uL3 MAPPS Limited, Bristol, UK 000007655 7001_ $$aParkin, Emma$$uL3 MAPPS Limited, Bristol, UK 000007655 773__ $$tConference Proceedings of INEC 000007655 773__ $$jINEC 2020 000007655 789__ $$whttps://zenodo.org/record/4472388$$2URL$$eIsIdenticalTo 000007655 85641 $$uhttps://www.imarest.org/events/inec-2020$$yConference website 000007655 8564_ $$943eca398-b998-41d9-9382-67508a9c45b4$$s2286512$$uhttps://library.imarest.org/record/7655/files/INEC_2020_Paper_20.pdf
