The Authors have observed that standards are sometimes applied without due regard of operational context. Equally they have spent hours assessing risks for simple reliable equipment designed to rules, codes and standards. &nbsp;<br> As a result, we propose in this paper, an integrated approach for assessing the whole ship safety, with a focus on the safe to operate aspects, building a comprehensive safety argument founded on an agreed standards set which is augmented with a focused safety assessment delivering value and a proportionate risk assessment. 000007620 542__ $$fCC-BY-NC-ND-4.0 000007620 6531_ $$aNaval 000007620 6531_ $$aRisk 000007620 6531_ $$aSafety 000007620 6531_ $$aHazard 000007620 6531_ $$aManagement 000007620 6531_ $$aMIL882E 000007620 7001_ $$aJames, P J$$uLloyd's Register EMEA, UK 000007620 7001_ $$aFranks, A$$uLloyd's Register EMEA, UK 000007620 773__ $$tConference Proceedings of INEC 000007620 773__ $$jINEC 2018 000007620 789__ $$whttps://zenodo.org/record/2451021$$2URL$$eIsIdenticalTo 000007620 85641 $$uhttps://imarest.org/inec$$yConference website 000007620 8564_ $$9ecae5945-ef65-4305-8261-489dca2d58ab$$s2510326$$uhttps://library.imarest.org/record/7620/files/INEC%202018%20Paper%20073%20James%20FINAL.pdf
