This paper deals with facing the challenges emerged within this framework, as in the ship case, certain retrofitting works have to take place onboard a ship such as the installation of water ballast treatment systems, scrubbers, cold-ironing facilities, and LED lights. The paper discusses the necessity to perform a number of studies (e.g. harmonic distortion, short-circuit, arc-flash etc) so that major safety requirements are met, while on the other hand, the electric energy system has to be tuned to a significant extent so that it operates in an optimum manner which is most often interpreted as minimum fuel consumption and emissions. Further, the paper makes a similar discussion for the case of the ports. 000007563 542__ $$fCC-BY-NC-ND-4.0 000007563 6531_ $$agreen shipping 000007563 6531_ $$awater ballast treatment system 000007563 6531_ $$ascrubber units 000007563 6531_ $$aLED lights 000007563 6531_ $$ashort-circuit study 000007563 6531_ $$aarc-flash study 000007563 7001_ $$aProusalidis, J$$uSchool of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, National Technical University of Athens 000007563 7001_ $$aSpathis, D$$uProtasis s.a. 000007563 7001_ $$aPapaspilitopoulos, V$$uProtasis s.a. 000007563 7001_ $$aGeorgiou, V$$uProtasis s.a. 000007563 7001_ $$aKourmpelis, T$$uLloyd's Register 000007563 7001_ $$aKanellos, F$$uSchool of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Technical University of Chania 000007563 773__ $$tConference Proceedings of MECSS 000007563 773__ $$jMECSS 2019 000007563 789__ $$whttps://zenodo.org/record/3381454$$2URL$$eIsIdenticalTo 000007563 8564_ $$97feca032-bc3e-443d-b495-22ea5bb7012f$$s1218946$$uhttps://library.imarest.org/record/7563/files/MECSS%202019%20Paper%20005%20Prousalidis%20Final%20P.pdf
