Making a direct measurement of compliance can be a long process requiring skilled scientists and resulting in costly delays. Several companies have developed rapid compliance tools which make indicative measurements based on well-established scientific methods. The question is – what is being done in the maritime industry to show these indicative measurements are truly a good indication of compliance with the ballast water regulations? This paper presents why the 10-50 μm sample size is being used for these indicative measurements, the types of data presented by indicative tools, an overview of the various instruments being developed, and then most importantly, what organisations are validating compliance monitoring and what is the current status of their validations. In addition, some organisations who have already adopted using compliance monitoring in their processes and how they are using it will be included. 000007535 542__ $$fCC-BY-NC-ND-4.0 000007535 6531_ $$aIndicative monitoring 000007535 6531_ $$aRapid compliance 000007535 6531_ $$aVariable fluorescence 000007535 6531_ $$aPAM fluorescence 000007535 6531_ $$aFluorometry 000007535 6531_ $$aBallast Water compliance 000007535 6531_ $$aPhytoplankton 000007535 6531_ $$aIndicative tools 000007535 6531_ $$aMeteor 000007535 7001_ $$aMayerfeld, Pam$$uTurner Designs 000007535 7001_ $$aYounan, Lawrence$$uTurner Designs 000007535 773__ $$jBWTC 2017 000007535 773__ $$tConference Proceedings of BWTC 000007535 789__ $$whttps://zenodo.org/record/1454095$$2URL$$eIsIdenticalTo 000007535 8564_ $$92494292a-912e-413a-94d9-98b299895c9f$$s267467$$uhttps://library.imarest.org/record/7535/files/10_24868BWTC6_2017_004.pdf
