Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds tremendous potential to aid the development of the maritime space and has been investigated and implemented by its domain counterparts, land, and air. However, while it can offer advancements in navigation, vessel control, cybersecurity, and combat system, it is fundamentally slowed by issues that fall under Trustworthy AI. This paper showcases the different implementations and the potential of AI within the maritime space, before exploring the problem of trustworthy AI systems, leading to the need for holistic, case specific approaches to bridge the technological gap between maritime and other domains.
