TY - GEN AB - For a traditionally slow-moving industry, the commercial maritime sector is moving at pace to support the net zero ambitions of the IMO. There are numerous vessels installed with Energy Saving Technologies (ESTs) and designs gaining approval-in-principle to operate with alternative fuels, whilst some are now entering service. Capitalising on the growth in emission reduction technologies in the commercial market could support navies in reducing current energy demands through installation of Energy Saving Technologies, and potentially offer routes to net zero operations via alternative fuels. This paper explores the technologies readily available that are in use in the commercial sector and how they could be applied to naval vessels. Options surrounding low carbon fuels & global availability will then be reviewed with a model for the transition of naval platforms to net zero operations. Finally, the benefits and challenges of implementing both energy saving technologies and low carbon fuels will be explored offering a holistic view of implementing them on a naval platform.
