The Arctic is of critical strategic importance to the US and our Navy?s ships must be capable of operating safely and effectively in this hostile environment of sea ice, sea fog, extreme cold, long periods of dark/diminished sunlight, topside icing, heavy seas and unpredictable weather. This paper discusses US Navy Arctic policy and guidance, surface ship operational requirements and capabilities, near-term operator guidance and pack up kits, and ongoing scientific research and technology development including at-sea experimentation. The unique and challenging conditions of the Arctic region present an opportunity for innovation and new technology solutions that deliver capabilities necessary for surface ships to operate in this unforgiving maritime environment. 000010648 542__ $$fCC-BY-NC-ND 000010648 6531_ $$aArctic 000010648 6531_ $$aIce 000010648 6531_ $$aHigh North 000010648 6531_ $$aOperability 000010648 6531_ $$aGreat Power Competition 000010648 7001_ $$aSturtevant, G$$uUS Department of Navy 000010648 7001_ $$aChavanne, J$$uTech Marine Business, Inc 000010648 7001_ $$aBoulay, W$$uUSN retired 000010648 7001_ $$aDove, L$$uTech Marine Business, Inc 000010648 773__ $$tConference Proceedings of INEC 000010648 773__ $$jINEC 2022 000010648 85641 $$uhttps://www.imarest.org/events/category/categories/imarest-event/international-naval-engineering-conference-and-exhibition-2022$$yConference website 000010648 8564_ $$915879420-5a92-4fec-a11d-81b221a787cc$$s375755$$uhttps://library.imarest.org/record/10648/files/INEC_2022_paper_46.pdf 000010648 980__ $$aConference Proceedings
